MAKURDI, Nigeria – The United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, commends Benue State for aligning humanitarian response with long-term development despite persistent security challenges.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Makurdi on Friday, she says the approach is critical to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“Benue holds a vital place in Nigeria’s food system. What matters is ensuring current challenges do not derail long-term progress,” she says.
Amina acknowledges that violence and displacement continue to disrupt communities but highlights efforts to resettle displaced families and restore livelihoods.
“Helping households regain access to land shows coordinated leadership,” she adds.
She stresses that sustainable progress depends on linking emergency relief with long-term planning; while calling for stronger peacebuilding rooted in justice and inclusion.
“Peace cannot endure without justice. Communities must feel protected and heard,” she says.
Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia reveals that over 500,000 residents have been displaced but notes ongoing reconstruction efforts in housing, healthcare and education.
“We are focused on rebuilding lives and creating lasting opportunities,” Alia says.
The UN reiterates its commitment to supporting recovery, particularly through education and youth-focused programmes.
