IBADAN, Nigeria – A 300-level medical student at the University of Ibadan dies after ingesting an insecticide at a campus residence, hospital authorities confirm.
The student, whose identity is withheld, was found on Sunday night on the ground floor of Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall, foaming at the mouth and disoriented, according to preliminary accounts. He reportedly admits to consuming Sniper, a highly toxic insecticide, before losing consciousness.
Roommates immediately alert hall officials, who arrange emergency transport to Jaja Clinic, where he is stabilised with oxygen and intravenous fluids. He is later transferred to the emergency unit of University College Hospital, placed on life support and treated intensively.
Confirming the death, UCH spokesperson Funmi Adetuyibi in a statement on Monday says the student does not survive despite medical intervention.
“The student was brought in following reports that he consumed Sniper. The hospital responded accordingly, but sadly, he passed away,” she says.
The student’s parents, who live in Akure, Ondo State, are contacted and arrive at the hospital before his death. While they reportedly raise concerns about possible poisoning, roommates insist the student admits to ingesting the insecticide and note recent behavioural changes, including social withdrawal and missed classes.
The incident coincides with renewed warnings by Suicide Is No Solution Initiative, which condemns the growing trend of suicide-themed skits on social media. The group’s project coordinator, Toye Arulogun, says such content trivialises self-harm and could undermine public-health campaigns.
If you or someone you know is struggling with emotional distress or suicidal thoughts, seek immediate help from local health services or trusted support organisations.
