President Bola Tinubu
ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu asks the Senate to swiftly confirm nominees to Nigeria’s petroleum regulators, aiming to strengthen oversight and investor confidence.
The request covers 21 nominees for the boards of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). Former senator Magnus Abe is nominated as NUPRC chairman, alongside non-executive commissioners Paul Yaro Jezhi and Sunday Adebayo Babalola.
In a statement, presidential adviser Bayo Onanuga says the nominations ensure continuity and technical competence. “The President urges expeditious approval in the national interest,” the statement says.
Tinubu also names executive commissioners to NUPRC, including Muhammed Sabo Lamido (Finance) and Edu Inyang (Exploration), among others. For NMDPRA, energy law expert Adegbite Ebiowei Adeniji is nominated as chairman, with seasoned executives proposed across finance, processing, gas infrastructure and corporate services.
The move follows Senate confirmation of new CEOs for both regulators and reinforces commitments under the Petroleum Industry Act. Tinubu charges appointees to act “professionally and independently” to deepen reforms and boost confidence across the oil and gas value chain.
