Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa
ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu has urged state governments to domesticate the National Urban Development Policy to strengthen planning and promote sustainable growth across Nigerian cities.
The call was conveyed by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, at the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) 56th International Conference in Abuja on Wednesday.
Tinubu stated that cities should serve as spaces of innovation, integration, and responsible environmental stewardship.
He said Nigeria faces challenges including rapid urbanisation, informal settlements, infrastructure deficits, and environmental risks, which require coordinated planning responses.
He added that the Federal Government recently inaugurated bus terminals in Abuja and awarded contracts for terminals across the six geopolitical zones to support urban regeneration.
NITP President, Dr. Ogbonna Chime, noted that planning practices are often weakened by poor political will and selective implementation of master plans.
He warned that political interference has led to haphazard growth and environmental degradation.
Chime called for stronger collaboration between planners and policymakers to achieve liveable and well-structured cities.
