Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment, Tokunbo Wahab
LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State Government says it has deployed 1,710 public toilets across the state as part of efforts to eliminate open defecation and improve sanitation.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab says the facilities are strategically located to serve residents and visitors.
“We currently have 1,710 functioning public toilets positioned across Lagos to enhance sanitation,” Wahab states.
He emphasises that government efforts alone are insufficient, urging private businesses to open their restrooms to the public.
“The government cannot do this alone. Businesses must support by making restrooms accessible where possible,” he says.
The initiative forms part of broader strategies to improve hygiene and public health in Africa’s most populous city.
Wahab warns that authorities will continue enforcing environmental laws, including arresting and prosecuting offenders.
“These measures are necessary to protect public health and preserve dignity,” he adds.
Public health experts warn that poor sanitation contributes to disease outbreaks, making access to toilets critical for urban sustainability.
The commissioner calls for collective responsibility, stressing that sanitation remains a shared duty between government, businesses and residents.
