ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, launches a nationwide economic empowerment programme for persons with disabilities (PwDs), disbursing ₦200,000 business grants to 9,500 beneficiaries to mark the 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
The initiative is unveiled at the Mambilla Barracks in Abuja, where 250 physically challenged military and police veterans receive the first batch of support.
Senator Tinubu says the scheme is designed to remove long-standing economic barriers faced by PwDs. “Nigeria is stronger when every citizen is empowered to contribute meaningfully to our national development. No one should be left behind,” she says.
She explains that the intervention aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which targets inclusive economic growth. “Through the Renewed Hope Initiative, we have supported more than 100,000 women, traders and persons with disabilities with financial grants in the last two years,” she adds.
The ₦200,000 funding is expected to serve as seed capital for small-scale enterprises, farming, and vocational ventures chosen by the recipients. Wednesday’s programme also highlights the inclusion of wounded veterans who suffered disabilities in active service. Many express gratitude for the recognition and say the support will help them pursue independent livelihoods.
