Nigerian students collect waste at Lagos market on World Cleanup Day
LAGOS, Nigeria – Hundreds of student volunteers joined forces on Saturday to mark World Cleanup Day with what organisers described as Lagos State’s largest environmental cleanup.
The campaign, spearheaded by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Lagos chapter, took place at Iyana-Iba Market in Ojo Local Government Area.
Participants cleared waste, promoted recycling, and sensitised traders on sustainable practices. Partners included GenImpact Africa, Lima Adejoke Foundation, and the Rotaract Club of Lagos State University (LASU).
“The large-scale exercise mobilised hundreds of volunteers and community members to collectively tackle Lagos’ waste crisis,” said NANS Lagos PRO, Ridwan Ajayi.
According to organisers, the Lagos Waste Management Authority evacuated truckloads of plastics, cans, and solid waste.
Ajayi explained that the initiative was part of a wider collaboration between UNICEF and NANS Lagos to promote youth-led climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“This World Cleanup Day set a benchmark for coordinated environmental action,” NANS said in a statement, thanking volunteers and partner agencies.
World Cleanup Day, observed in over 190 countries, mobilises millions globally to clean streets, rivers, forests, and public spaces.
