ABUJA, Nigeria – The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) warns of imminent industrial action if ongoing negotiations with the Federal Government fail by the end of April.
The union issues the warning after a National Executive Council meeting in Abuja, reaffirming its ultimatum.
SSANU President Muhammad Ibrahim says no final agreement has been reached despite ongoing talks.
“Reports suggesting the renegotiation process has been concluded are misleading,” he states.
The union dismisses claims of a 30 per cent allowance increase, insisting no binding agreement exists.
“We will not accept any outcome below the negotiated understanding already reached,” Ibrahim says.
SSANU stresses that fairness and due process must guide negotiations, warning that failure to meet the April 30 deadline will trigger a nationwide strike.
“SSANU, alongside NASU, will embark on an indefinite industrial action if the deadline is missed,” the communiqué states.
The threat follows earlier concerns over salary delays, poor funding and deteriorating working conditions in universities.
The union urges members to remain united and prepared for possible directives.
Education analysts warn that another strike could disrupt academic calendars and worsen instability in Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
