ABUJA, Nigeria – A tragic multiple-vehicle collision on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway has claimed the lives of a father, mother, and their child, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed.
The crash, which occurred at dawn near Secretariat inward Otedola Bridge, began when a speeding truck heavily laden with goods rammed into a car from behind, pushing it into two other vehicles.
LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the incident in a statement on Wednesday as “an unbearable and irreplaceable loss of an entire family,” as officials recovered the victims and worked to stabilise the scene.
Rescue operations were carried out by a coordinated team of emergency responders, including LASTMA, LASEMA, FRSC, LASAMBUS, SEHMU, and the Lagos Fire & Rescue Service.
Two survivors in critical condition were freed from the wreckage and rushed by LASAMBUS to the Lagos State Emergency and Trauma Centre at Toll Gate for urgent medical attention.
The fleeing truck driver, who abandoned the scene after causing the chain crash, remained at large as police officers from the Isheri Olowora Division secured the area.
Bakare-Oki lamented that the disaster was avoidable, reiterating LASTMA’s repeated warnings against excessive speeding, especially by operators of articulated trucks.
He emphasised that speeding continues to be a leading factor in fatal road accidents across Lagos. He urged all motorists to drive responsibly, observe speed limits, and prioritise defensive driving.
He added that LASTMA would continue strengthening its traffic surveillance systems and deepen cooperation with emergency agencies to curb preventable road tragedies.
