Lagos Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab
LAGOS, Nigeria – Lagos environmental officers come under violent attack while enforcing wastewater regulations at a Victoria Island restaurant, state authorities confirm.
Four officials from the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) suffer injuries after hoodlums assault them during an operation against illegal discharge of untreated wastewater, fats and oil.
The incident occurs at Yakoyo Abula Restaurant on Sinari Daranijo Street, Victoria Island, after the establishment allegedly breaks a government seal, escalating tensions into physical violence.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, condemns the attack in a statement posted on X on Wednesday, describing it as a direct assault on law and order. “The restaurant not only broke the government seal but unleashed armed thugs on officers lawfully discharging their duties,” Wahab says. “This crosses every line.”
He warns that any business or individual who assaults government officials will face swift enforcement action, sealing of premises and prosecution.
Authorities arrest the restaurant’s supervisor and immediately seal the premises pending further investigation. Officials say more arrests are expected as efforts intensify to identify all those involved.
The Lagos State Government reiterates its resolve to enforce environmental laws across the city, noting that illegal wastewater discharge poses serious public health and environmental risks. “This administration will not tolerate intimidation or violence against its officers,” Wahab adds, pledging full legal action against offenders.
