LAGOS, Nigeria – The Senate witnessed tense exchanges on Wednesday during the screening of President Bola Tinubu’s new Minister of Defence nominee, General Christopher Musa (rtd), who vowed to prioritise national security amid escalating violence across the country.
General Musa, a former Chief of Defence Staff, told lawmakers that Nigeria’s security challenges require collective responsibility. “I pledge to do my best to ensure that Nigeria is secure and safe,” he said. “We need the support of everyone… it’s going to be a team effort.”
Highlighting the gravity of the security situation, Musa warned that “the enemies we are dealing with are evil forces… they have no respect for human lives,” stressing the need for unity to ensure such groups are contained.
His nomination follows the resignation of former Defence Minister Alhaji Badaru Abubakar, who stepped down citing health reasons after months of criticism over his handling of security issues.
General Musa pledged to build stronger coordination across the military and security agencies, assuring lawmakers of his commitment to restoring stability.
