ABUJA, Nigeria – The 2025 capital budget will remain open for implementation until the end of December 2026 after the House of Representatives approved another three-month extension, the fourth since the original budget deadline.
The House on Tuesday, September 29, approved the extension, moving the deadline from September 30 to December 31, 2026. The bill was sponsored by House Leader Julius Ihonvbere and passed through first and second readings before lawmakers considered its provisions clause by clause and subsequently approved it at third reading.
Ihonvbere said the extension was necessary because the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act had not been fully implemented, citing economic difficulties.
The latest decision gives ministries, departments and agencies an additional three months to implement capital projects contained in the 2025 budget.
The implementation period was initially extended in December 2025 before being moved to June 30, 2026, in March and subsequently to September 30 in June.
The latest extension therefore means capital allocations from the 2025 budget can continue to be implemented until December 31, 2026.
The move comes amid continued challenges surrounding the implementation of capital expenditure within the annual budget cycle. The House adjourned plenary until October 13 after considering the bill.
Lawmakers had resumed plenary on Tuesday following their recess, which began on July 23, ahead of Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary on October 1.
