KATSINA, Nigeria – The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of armed bandits, saying the former military officer died from complications linked to diabetes and hypertension during captivity.
The announcement was made on Saturday in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr Nasiru Mu’azu, who describes the development as a major loss to Katsina State and Nigeria.
According to the state government, security agencies and government officials made sustained efforts to secure the retired general’s release before his death.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity. Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy,” the statement says.
Authorities say the retired military officer died from natural causes associated with underlying health conditions while being held by his abductors.
The government describes the incident as a tragedy that extends beyond the immediate family of the deceased.
“His abduction and subsequent death are not only a loss to his family and Katsina State but a monumental loss to the entire country,” the statement adds.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expresses condolences to the family of the late officer and Nigerians, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the security challenges confronting communities across northwestern Nigeria.
He reiterates the state’s commitment to working closely with the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen security operations and dismantle bandit networks.
“The Katsina State Government remains committed to working with the Federal Government and security forces to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice,” the statement says.
