ABUJA, Nigeria – Electricity consumers across seven northern states face weeks of power disruption as Nigeria upgrades critical transmission infrastructure.
The Nigerian Independent System Operator says the outage, affecting the Jos–Gombe 330kV line, will run from April 9 to May 22, 2026.
The disruption will occur weekly from Thursday to Sunday, between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., impacting Plateau, Gombe, Bauchi, Borno, Adamawa, Taraba and Yobe states.
According to the operator, the outage supports installation of fibre optic infrastructure to improve grid intelligence and operations.
“Supply… will be maintained through available 132kV lines… however customers may experience reduced power supply,” the notice states.
The upgrade aims to enhance real-time monitoring, fault detection and load management, while improving overall system reliability.
Despite mitigation plans, experts warn that limited capacity and network constraints could worsen electricity shortages in affected areas.
Authorities say the temporary disruption is necessary to deliver long-term improvements in efficiency and service delivery.
