OSUN, Nigeria – Nigeria Labour Congress in Osun State threatens industrial action over alleged arrests and harassment of local government workers at council secretariats.
Osun NLC chairman Christopher Arapasopo demands an immediate halt to what he describes as the serial arrest and humiliation of workers at local government offices across the state. The warning follows reports that two to three workers are apprehended at council secretariats in Boluwaduro and Egbedore local governments.
Although the Osun State Police Command does not officially confirm the arrests, sources within the All-Progressives Congress say the workers are detained while allegedly attempting to remove documents from council offices. Images and videos purportedly showing arrested workers and seized documents circulate widely on social media.
Speaking at the 2026 annual prayer event organised by the Osun State Government in Abere, on Monday, Arapasopo accuses the police of aiding political interests and vows that organised labour will respond if the situation persists.
“It is unacceptable for the police to support politicians to parade and humiliate local government workers,” he says. “Our members have done nothing wrong, and this harassment must stop immediately.”
He condemns images showing workers allegedly forced to kneel, calling for their immediate release. “We will resist legally and lawfully. We will not allow Osun to be plunged into crisis,” Arapasopo adds, warning that labour will not tolerate continued intimidation.
The NLC leader also reaffirms labour’s support for Governor Ademola Adeleke, saying workers will mobilise politically and defend democratic processes.
The dispute emerges shortly after local government workers resume duties following an 11-month strike, heightening tensions across council areas.
