ABUJA, Nigeria – Oilwatch International has urged the Federal Government to adopt long-term climate adaptation and environmental restoration strategies to address decades of pollution in the Niger Delta.
Speaking on Saturday at its Annual General Meeting in Port Harcourt, Coordinator Kentebe Ebiaridor stressed the need for renewable energy transition, enforcement of emission standards, and an end to gas flaring.
“Communities need climate-resilient infrastructure and support systems to survive worsening flooding and ecosystem damage,” he said.
Oilwatch Nigeria Coordinator, Dr. Emem Okon, called for climate financing that directly benefits rural women affected by pollution.
“Women in the Niger Delta are already taking proactive steps to cope with health and livelihood impacts of climate change. The government should support them with vocational skills and startup funds to cushion the effects of climate-related disasters,” Okon stated.
Executive Director of We the People, Ken Henshaw, pressed for legal reforms to hold oil companies accountable for environmental damage.
