OGUN, Nigeria – The Ogun State Police Command says it has foiled a suspected robbery operation in Ijaba, Iyesi, Ota, killing one suspected gang member and recovering two vehicles, two pistols and other items believed to have been stolen.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, after the police received a distress call from a resident. The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday.
He said operatives from the Onipanu Divisional Police Headquarters, under the Ota Area Command, responded to the report at about 1.45 am. According to Babaseyi, the suspected robbers opened fire when they sighted the approaching patrol team, triggering an exchange of gunfire in which one suspect was killed.
Other members of the gang reportedly escaped with suspected gunshot injuries. A search of the scene led to the recovery of two vehicles — a Nissan Almera and a Toyota Camry — as well as two pistols and other suspected stolen property. Items reportedly recovered from the deceased suspect included a Tecno mobile phone, three passport photographs, an MTN SIM pack, two National Identification Number cards and cash.
Babaseyi said the command had intensified efforts to locate the fleeing suspects, particularly those who might have sustained gunshot injuries. He added that investigations were ongoing to establish the ownership of the recovered vehicles and other exhibits, as well as determine whether they were linked to other criminal activities.
The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended the operatives for their swift response and professionalism.
Ojajuni reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing, sustained patrols and rapid response to security concerns across the state. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements or activities to the police, assuring them that the command remained committed to protecting lives and property.
