OGUN, Nigeria – The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 56-year-old man, Madarikan Emehinola, in connection with the death of his wife, Igbagbo Erobe, 40, in a suspected arson incident at Igbo-Edu Village in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area.
The incident was reported at the Abigi Divisional Police Headquarters on Sunday, October 18, following an alleged domestic dispute between the couple.
A resident of the community said neighbours heard the woman screaming for help but were unable to rescue her before she sustained fatal burns. “The entire community is still in disbelief. We heard desperate screams coming from the house, but before anyone could rush in to intervene, the victim was already severely burnt. It is a terrible tragedy,” the resident said anonymously.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday. He said the command received information that a house had been set ablaze, resulting in the woman’s death.
The deceased’s body has been deposited at a mortuary for a post-mortem examination, while the case is being processed for transfer to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.
The incident has also drawn attention following the circulation of a video reportedly obtained by Newslife. The footage allegedly shows the woman’s husband unloading her body from a police-branded motorboat at a riverbank as sympathisers gather nearby.
The circumstances surrounding the footage and the events leading to the woman’s death have not been independently established.
The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, assured the public that the case would be investigated diligently and professionally in accordance with the law. The command urged residents to report suspicious activities and provide credible information that could assist investigators.
