ABUJA, Nigeria- The Federal Government has moved to calm public concerns over possible fuel shortages and price increases, assuring Nigerians that the supply of refined petroleum products remains stable despite ongoing disputes involving the Dangote Refinery.
In a statement on Sunday, the Ministry of Finance said the Naira-for-crude initiative remains in place, following an emergency meeting of the Domestic Crude Oil and Refined Products Sales in Local Currency Steering Committee, chaired by Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun.
The government confirmed that disagreements with the refinery over the crude-for-naira arrangement had been “amicably resolved,” adding that sales in local currency have already resumed.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the crude oil for naira initiative will continue,” the committee stressed.
The meeting also addressed a labour dispute between the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and the refinery. The union had earlier threatened a nationwide shutdown, accusing the refinery of unfair dismissals and replacing Nigerian workers with foreign staff.
Following government intervention, the Dangote Refinery issued a memo announcing the resumption of petrol sales in naira and urged marketers to proceed with orders.
Officials insisted that Nigerians should not expect scarcity or sudden price hikes, emphasising the government’s commitment to energy security, consumer protection, and downstream stability.
The assurance comes amid wider efforts to stabilise the petroleum sector and strengthen confidence in local refining capacity.
