GOMBE, Nigeria – The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) announces a nationwide protest scheduled for December 17, as organised labour intensifies pressure on authorities over Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.
NLC President Joe Ajaero disclosed the plan on Saturday during a visit to Gombe State, where he held discussions with Governor Inuwa Yahaya on workers’ welfare, safety and employment concerns.
Ajaero says the demonstrations are intended to draw urgent attention to the growing wave of kidnappings, killings and violent crime affecting communities across the country. “We do not have guns or cutlasses to chase criminals,” Ajaero tells journalists. “Peaceful protest is our only voice to Nigerians and to the international community.”
The labour leader cites a recent incident in Kebbi State, where a teacher is killed and children of workers are abducted, as evidence that insecurity directly targets the working class. “Those affected are teachers, workers and their families,” he says. “We are asking the government to identify and stop those behind these crimes.”
Ajaero stresses that the protest is not aimed at confronting the government but at strengthening the resolve of authorities to act decisively. “Nigerians are saying this is wrong and must stop,” he adds
