LAGOS, Nigeria – The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has condemned recent fire disasters in Lagos Island, accusing authorities of systemic negligence after six deaths at Afriland Towers and billions lost in market fires.
“These fires are not accidents of fate,” the NLC declared in a statement on Thursday. “They are the product of institutional failure and reckless disregard for safety.”
The labour union faulted government agencies and corporate firms for neglecting fire precautions, citing workers forced to leap from windows during the UBA building blaze as “a national disgrace.”
It demanded an independent investigation, stronger fire services, enforcement of safety standards, and adequate compensation for victims. “No worker should leave home in the morning and end up in the morgue because of preventable disasters,” it added.
In a separate development, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed condolences to bereaved families and pledged reforms: “In this difficult time, Lagos mourns with you, and we are committed to strengthening safety measures to prevent future tragedies.”
