ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigerian community leaders in South Africa have demanded swift investigations and stronger protection for migrants following the deaths of two Nigerian nationals in separate violent incidents, intensifying calls for accountability and improved security for members of the diaspora.
The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) said it has stepped up diplomatic engagement with Nigerian and South African authorities after the killings of Emeka Charles Iroegbu and Musa Yunana Joe, describing the incidents as deeply disturbing and calling for justice.
In a statement issued on Sunday, NUSA National Publicity Secretary, Akindele Olunloyo, condemned the attacks and said the organisation was working closely with the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, the Consulate General in Johannesburg and South African security agencies to ensure both cases are thoroughly investigated.
According to the union, Iroegbu was allegedly killed by officers of the Tshwane Metro Police in Sunnyside, Pretoria, while Musa Yunana Joe was reportedly attacked by unidentified assailants in Witbank, Mpumalanga Province. Both incidents occurred on June 28.
NUSA said it has initiated direct engagement with South African law enforcement authorities to seek accountability and prevent similar incidents involving Nigerians living in the country.
“We demand prompt, transparent and exhaustive investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and face the full wrath of the law,” Olunloyo said.
NUSA also appealed to members of the Nigerian community to remain peaceful and cooperate fully with security agencies while investigations continue.
The organisation urged Nigerians living in South Africa to remain vigilant, observe personal safety precautions and promptly report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
According to the union, stronger collaboration between diplomatic missions, law enforcement agencies and community leaders remains critical to protecting Nigerians abroad and ensuring justice for victims of violent attacks.
