KEBBI, Nigeria – Nigerian troops on Monday repelled a deadly ambush on a convoy carrying a senior army commander near Mayama Hill in the Northwest, killing five suspected terrorists.
The Nigerian Army says the attack targets a convoy conveying the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA.
According to Acting Deputy Director, Major General Bemgha Koughna, Army Public Relations, Olaniyi Osoba, the ambush occurs as the convoy travels through forested terrain to visit frontline troops.
“Armed assailants open heavy fire on the convoy,” Osoba says. “The troops respond with overwhelming force.”
He says Major General Koughna demonstrates decisive leadership as soldiers neutralise five attackers and successfully repel the assault.
Following the clash, troops conducted a sweep of the area, recovering weapons and items including AK-47 rifles, a PKT gun, ammunition, motorcycles, mobile phones and ₦840,000 in cash.
Osoba says soldiers remain deployed to prevent further attacks and reassure communities.
“The operation underscores the commitment of 8 Division to protect civilians and dismantle terrorist networks across the Northwest,” he adds.
