ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria’s Senate has begun deliberations on a proposed law to establish a national Artificial Intelligence, Innovation and Communication Technology Solutions Centre in Omuo-Ekiti, Ekiti State, aimed at accelerating technological development and strengthening the country’s digital economy.
The Artificial Intelligence, Innovation and Communication Technology Solutions Centre, Omuo-Ekiti (Establishment) Bill, 2025 (SB.763), sponsored by Senator Adeyemi Adaramodu (Ekiti South), scaled second reading during Tuesday’s plenary session.
Presenting the bill, Adaramodu said Nigeria must invest strategically in emerging technologies to remain competitive globally.
“Nations that fail to invest in artificial intelligence risk being left behind in the 21st-century knowledge economy,” he cautioned.
The proposed centre will serve as a hub for research, government–industry collaboration, and skills development in critical areas such as robotics, advanced computing, and digital systems. The Senator said Ekiti State’s longstanding reputation as a centre of academic excellence made it a suitable location.
According to the bill, the centre will support innovations that address national challenges in agriculture, healthcare, education, transport, and public governance — while reducing dependence on foreign technology solutions.
“The aim is not to expand bureaucracy but to build an institution of excellence capable of nurturing a digitally ready workforce,” Adaramodu said.
Lawmakers supporting the bill described it as a strategic intervention to boost youth employment and strengthen Nigeria’s participation in global technology markets. The Senate referred it to the Committee on Science and Technology for further legislative work.
If established, the centre will serve the South-West region while contributing to wider national development goals.
