ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigeria Police Force suspends the nationwide enforcement of its tinted glass permit policy following an interim court order restraining the move, raising fresh debate over public safety and civil liberties.
The Force announced on December 15, 2025, that enforcement would commence on January 2, 2026, citing national security concerns. However, enforcement was halted after the police were served with an interim order on December 17, 2025, in Suit No. HOR/FHR/M/31/2025.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Force Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin confirms that the order restrains the police from proceeding with enforcement pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.
“The Nigeria Police Force was served with an interim order of court restraining the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy pending further judicial determination,” Hundeyin states.
He adds that the police have entered an appearance, raised preliminary objections, and formally applied for the vacation of the interim order. The case was adjourned to January 20, 2026.
“In strict compliance with the subsisting court order, the Nigeria Police Force has placed enforcement on hold nationwide,” the statement says.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirms the Force’s commitment to the rule of law. “The Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in upholding the rule of law while protecting lives and property through lawful, intelligence-driven strategies,” he says.
The Force assures the public that further guidance will follow the court’s decision in the interest of public order and national security.
