ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Ministry of Environment has issued flood alerts for 15 states and 69 communities, warning that heavy rainfall from 24–28 September 2025 could trigger widespread flooding.
The National Flood Early Warning Centre disclosed this in a statement signed by Director of Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management, Usman Abdullahi Bokani on Wednesday.
“Heavy rainfall is likely to occur in 15 states across the country… This may lead to flooding in the following locations and their environs,” the alert read.
The warning comes as flash floods paralysed parts of Lagos earlier this week. Residents shared videos of vehicles wading through submerged roads in Lekki, Ago Palace Way, and Mile 2.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, today, apologised, stressing Lagos’s “natural vulnerability as a coastal city” but warning against illegal construction and dumping waste in drains.
“We appeal for cooperation from the public. Keeping drains clear and avoiding construction on floodplains are vital,” he said.
In Kogi, five communities in Ibaji Local Government have been submerged by rising waters from the Niger and Benue Rivers.
State Emergency Agency head, Mouktar Atima, urged immediate relocation, warning that the next 72 hours would be critical.
Health Commissioner, Dr. Adams Abdullazeez said 42 IDP camps had been fumigated and prepared.
The National Emergency Management Agency reports at least 232 deaths and over 121,000 displaced nationwide as of 20 September.
