ANAMBRA, Nigeria – Police in Anambra State have launched an intensive manhunt after a consultant neurosurgeon, identified as Dr. Mbanugo T., was abducted by armed men in Uruagu, Nnewi North Local Government Area.
The medical specialist was reportedly seized along the New Nnewi–Oba Road on Thursday night, an incident that has heightened anxiety across the community.
Confirming the development on Friday, spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said officers immediately opened investigations after receiving the report.
“According to preliminary information, the incident occurred on Thursday, 30 October 2025, when unidentified assailants abducted the victim under yet-to-be-clarified circumstances,” Ikenga said.
He added that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered a coordinated search effort involving tactical units and intelligence operatives.
“The command assures the public that every effort is being made to rescue the victim safely and apprehend the perpetrators,” Ikenga stated.
He urged residents to remain calm and report useful information to assist ongoing investigations.
Kidnapping for ransom continues to pose one of Nigeria’s most persistent security challenges. Health professionals, clergy, business owners, and travellers are increasingly targeted due to their perceived financial value.
