ABUJA, Nigeria – The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency have sealed a factory in Oyo State over illegal discharge of untreated industrial waste, citing serious environmental and public health risks.
The agency shuts down Bond Chemicals Industries Limited after discovering the company released “untreated wastewater with an offensive odour” into the environment, violating regulatory standards.
According to NESREA on Thursday, inspections conducted in February reveal the facility lacks a functional effluent treatment plant, a critical requirement for industrial operations.
Despite receiving compliance notices to address the violations and obtain proper permits, the company fails to act.
Assistant Director of Press Nwamaka Ejiofor says the closure is necessary “to prevent further environmental degradation and safeguard public health.”
Director-General Innocent Barikor warns that the agency will enforce strict sanctions against defaulters.
“We will not hesitate to apply appropriate sanctions on industries that fail to meet pollution control standards,” he says.
Authorities stress that the enforcement action underscores a broader crackdown on industrial pollution across Nigeria.
NESREA reiterates its commitment to ensuring environmental compliance and protecting communities from hazardous waste exposure.
