ABUJA, Nigeria – The NEMSA-LASERC partnership is set to strengthen electrical safety enforcement, improve metering standards and enhance consumer protection following a new agreement between the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) and the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC).
The commitment was reached on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by LASERC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Temitope George, to the NEMSA headquarters in Abuja, where both agencies agree to deepen collaboration on technical inspections, regulatory compliance and public awareness campaigns.
The NEMSA-LASERC partnership aims to harmonise technical standards, coordinate inspections, strengthen metering enforcement and launch multilingual public enlightenment campaigns in English, Yoruba and Nigerian Pidgin to curb electricity theft, meter tampering and unsafe electrical installations.
NEMSA Managing Director and Chief Electrical Inspector of the Federation, Engr. Olusegun Adesayo, describes the collaboration as a significant step towards building a safer and more reliable electricity sector.
“Stronger collaboration between the two organisations will improve compliance with technical regulations, boost investor and consumer confidence, and contribute to the delivery of a safer, more reliable and sustainable electricity supply across Nigeria,” Adesayo says.
Speaking during the visit, LASERC Managing Director Temitope George says strategic collaboration is critical to achieving a commercially viable electricity sector capable of meeting Lagos State’s growing energy demand.
She notes that the Lagos State Electricity Law 2024, signed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, creates the legal foundation for a decentralised electricity market through the establishment of LASERC, the Lagos Independent System Operator and the Lagos State Electrification Agency.
George proposes a formal NEMSA-LASERC partnership focused on harmonising technical standards, developing unified inspection protocols and strengthening consumer protection across the state’s electricity market.
