KANO, Nigeria – The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Federal Fire Service have stepped up joint efforts to improve emergency response readiness and fire safety awareness across Kano State.
The agencies showcased the renewed collaboration at the 2025 Fire Service Week held at the Police Officers’ Mess in Kano, where representatives from multiple emergency and security organisations were in attendance.
In a statement posted on its verified X handle on Friday, NEMA said the initiative aims to enhance operational coordination during disasters, strengthen community-level preparedness, and promote preventive practices among residents.
The event featured lectures, practical fire simulation drills, and demonstrations of rescue and evacuation procedures designed to improve the skills of first responders and volunteers.
A NEMA official at the event said disaster management relies heavily on inter-agency cooperation.
“Effective disaster response requires teamwork, shared knowledge and constant preparedness. No agency can manage emergencies alone,” the official said.
The agency noted that partnering with the Federal Fire Service, police authorities, and other response bodies would help build safer communities across the state.
“We are working to ensure that Kano is better prepared for emergencies and that residents understand the importance of prevention, early reporting, and adherence to safety guidelines,” the statement added.
The activities also served as a sensitisation campaign for households, schools and markets, following recent incidents of market fires and building collapses in the state.
The Fire Service Week is an annual platform to raise awareness about fire risks, promote safety education, and honour responders who have distinguished themselves in service.
