MINNA, Nigeria – The credibility of Nigeria’s examination system depends largely on the integrity, competence and commitment of personnel responsible for conducting examinations, the National Examinations Council (NECO) has said.
NECO Registrar, Prof. Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi, stated this on Wednesday in Minna, Niger State, at the council’s 2025 Annual Staff Productivity Award Ceremony, where outstanding staff, retirees and students were recognised for their contributions.
Wushishi said NECO had sustained its examination operations despite security challenges, including Boko Haram insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and sit-at-home orders.
He described NECO workers as the “army of NECO”, saying their commitment had enabled the council to continue its operations even in difficult environments. “During the heyday of Boko Haram, the activities of Boko Haram have never stopped NECO’s examination. Banditry has never stopped NECO examination. Kidnapping has never stopped NECO examination. Sit-at-home order has never stopped NECO examination,” he said.
According to Wushishi, the annual productivity awards were designed not merely to celebrate individual achievements but to strengthen accountability, motivate workers and encourage continuous improvement across the council.
Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation, Rt Hon Abdullahi Idris Garba, said recognising outstanding personnel should encourage greater productivity within NECO.
