NASENI Expands Empowerment Programme to Abia Rural Communities, Targets Jobs

ABIA, Nigeria – The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has expanded its Sustainable Empowerment Programme (NSEP) to rural communities in Abia State as part of efforts to promote grassroots entrepreneurship, technology adoption and sustainable livelihoods.
The programme was launched on Friday at Uma Ukpai Memorial Primary School, Asaga, Ohafia, where beneficiaries received empowerment kits and practical tools designed to improve productivity and income generation.
Speaking at the event, NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Khalil Suleiman Halilu, said science and technology should produce practical solutions that directly improve people’s lives.
“Science, technology and engineering must move beyond laboratories and institutions and translate into practical solutions that improve livelihoods, create opportunities and strengthen communities,” he said.
Halilu explained that NASENI’s development strategy is anchored on Creation, Collaboration and Commercialisation, with emphasis on local innovation, skills development and economic self-reliance.
He described Abia as a fitting location for the initiative because of its long-standing reputation for enterprise, creativity and manufacturing.
“We want beneficiaries to see this intervention as an investment in their productive capacity, not as a handout,” he added.
The NASENI boss said future assessments would focus on measurable outcomes such as improved livelihoods, stronger businesses, increased productivity and job creation.
He also assured participants that the empowerment programme would be extended to more communities across Nigeria.
Managing Director of the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), Dr Armstrong Ume Takang, praised the initiative, saying greater access to science and technology would help unlock the entrepreneurial potential of rural communities.
“Development is not about what you alone benefit from. If you are not able to bring development to your people, then you are nobody,” he said.
