ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria’s drug regulator NAFDAC dismisses claims that the antibiotic Amoxicillin has been secretly banned, describing the reports as false and misleading.
In a statement issued Monday, Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye clarifies that regulatory actions apply only to specific substandard products.
“Our actions targeted particular brands and batches that failed quality tests,” Adeyeye says. “There is no blanket ban on Amoxicillin.”
NAFDAC recalls that Amoxivue 500mg capsules were withdrawn in August 2025 due to insufficient active ingredients, while safety alerts followed for specific batches of Astamocil, Astamentin, Annmox and Jawamox suspensions.
“These were product-specific measures taken in the interest of public health,” Adeyeye adds.
The agency stresses that any restriction on medicines is always publicly communicated through official safety notices.
“NAFDAC has not banned Amoxicillin in Nigeria, either secretly or officially,” the statement reads.
