IJEBU-ODE, Nigeria – The Ogun State Government has temporarily relocated students of Our Lady of Apostles Girls Grammar School, Ijebu-Ode, following repeated methane gas incidents that have affected several schools in the area.
Governor Dapo Abiodun announced the relocation on Saturday during an inspection visit to the school, saying preliminary investigations confirmed the presence of methane gas within the affected environment.
According to the governor, the relocation was necessary to protect students, teachers and other members of the school community while experts investigate the source of the emissions.
“We have recorded similar incidents in about three schools, and these occurrences happened almost simultaneously on two separate occasions,” Abiodun said.
He disclosed that gas monitoring equipment installed after the first incident confirmed methane emissions.
The state government is working with the Ministries of Environment and Health, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority and geologists from Olabisi Onabanjo University to determine the cause.
Abiodun dismissed claims that the incidents were deliberately targeted at schools, describing the situation as a possible natural occurrence linked to geological factors.
The governor assured residents that students would only return after authorities certify the environment safe. Methane Leak Shuts Ogun School, Students Relocated
