ABUJA, Nigeria – Meta has announced it will begin using users’ conversations with its AI chatbot to personalise ads and content across Facebook and Instagram.
The company said on Wednesday that notifications will start on October 7 ahead of the December 16 rollout.
“Interactions with Meta AI, whether voice or text, will inform ad personalisation much like likes, shares, and posts already do,” said Christy Harris, Meta’s privacy and data policy manager.
The changes will first launch in most regions, with stricter-regulation markets like Europe adopting later.
Meta clarified that sensitive conversations — including politics, religion, health, and sexuality — will not be used. However, WhatsApp AI chats linked to Meta accounts will feed into content personalisation.
The company emphasised transparency. “We want users to understand what’s coming with plenty of lead time,” Harris said.
With over a billion people already engaging with Meta AI across its apps, the policy is expected to have a wide impact.
