ABUJA, Nigeria – A Lekki resident, Endurance Udeke, has died after jumping from a four-storey building during an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operation targeting suspected internet fraudsters.
The anti-graft agency confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, saying the November 4 raid at Periwinkle Estate, Lekki Phase 1 led to the arrest of four suspects. Udeke and another occupant of apartment W6a allegedly attempted to evade capture by jumping from the building.
“Udeke did not survive the suicidal effort, despite medical interventions made to rescue him,” the EFCC said. The second resident survived and has been stabilised after receiving treatment.
The commission emphasised that no physical contact occurred between officers and the deceased before he jumped, describing the event as “shocking” and “tragic.”
“There was no contact between officers of the Commission and the deceased before the unfortunate incident,” the statement read.
The EFCC has reported the matter to police, who have opened an investigation into the circumstances of Udeke’s death.
The agency also urged the public to remain calm during its operations. “No one with nothing to hide has reason to be afraid of EFCC sting operations,” it added.
The incident has sparked discussions across social media and local communities about the pressures faced by residents during high-profile anti-fraud raids in Lagos.
