Lagos Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab
ABUJA, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government intensifies its environmental enforcement drive as authorities arrest three suspects for illegal waste dumping along the busy Oshodi corridor.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announces the arrests in a statement posted on his official X account on Tuesday. He says the operation was carried out on Monday by the Lagos Waste Management Authority’s (LAWMA) Waste Infractions Surveillance and Investigation Team.
According to Wahab, the enforcement exercise targets recurring waste blackspots along major roads, where indiscriminate dumping continues to threaten public health and road safety. Officers apprehend the suspects while they dump refuse on the road median during the early-morning operation. “The apprehended individuals have been transferred to the LAWMA legal team at the Oshodi Mobile Court for further legal proceedings,” Wahab states.
The commissioner reiterates the state government’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental violations, warning residents and waste operators against flouting sanitation laws. He stresses that sustained enforcement is essential to keeping Lagos clean, liveable and resilient.
Environmental analysts say illegal dumping worsens flooding, spreads disease and undermines waste management reforms in Africa’s largest city. They add that consistent prosecution, alongside public education and accessible waste services, remains key to changing behaviour.
