LAGOS, Nigeria – Lagos authorities reclaim key Island roadways after a coordinated crackdown on illegal street trading, restoring traffic flow and pedestrian access across major commercial routes.
The Environmental and Special Offences Unit targets Marina, Davies Street, Breadfruit Street, and adjoining roads, dismantling stalls that had overtaken highways and pavements.
“Public roads are not marketplaces,” taskforce chairman Adetayo Akerele says. “These obstructions endanger lives and cripple mobility.”
Officials say some traders blocked access to St Paul Primary School, forcing pupils and staff to navigate unsafe routes.
During the operation on Friday, officers seized goods and removed structures under the Lagos Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017, which mandates forfeiture of illegally displayed merchandise.
Akerele notes that Davies Street, once a thriving commercial hub, had deteriorated due to unchecked encroachment.
Simultaneous enforcement clears the Iyana-Ipaja Underbridge, improving commuter access.
The taskforce warns that repeat offenders will face prosecution. “We will not allow a return to chaos,” Akerele adds.
