LAGOS, Nigeria – Lagos State has unveiled biofortified rice production at its Imota Rice Mill, making it one of the few Nigerian states capable of enriching rice with key micronutrients to combat malnutrition.
The launch on Friday introduced the sixth biofortified rice blending machine in Nigeria, designed to fortify rice with iron, zinc, folic acid and multiple B vitamins. Special Adviser on Agriculture to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Dr Oluwarotimi Fashola, described the development as a major stride in food and nutrition security.
“By fortifying our rice, we are meeting demand while addressing malnutrition, which remains a serious challenge,” Fashola said.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, Emmanuel Audu, hailed the mill — described as one of Africa’s largest — as a symbol of Lagos’ commitment to sustainable food production. He urged consumers to prioritise the fortified Eko Rice brand.
Special Adviser on Health, Mrs Kemi Ogunyemi, said the initiative would significantly reduce nutrition deficiencies across Lagos communities. The fortified rice rollout supports Nigeria’s broader campaign against micronutrient deficiencies affecting millions nationwide.
