Lagos Clarifies Randle Hospital Patient’s Treatment, Says N93,950 Care Was Free

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Lagos State Ministry of Health has clarified the circumstances surrounding the treatment of a patient at Randle General Hospital, Surulere, stating that emergency medical care and welfare support worth ₦93,950 were provided free of charge.
The clarification followed an investigation into allegations made on social media by Mrs. Oshodi regarding the treatment of her daughter, Alimat Oshodi.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, said the ministry’s findings showed that the patient was 21 years old, contrary to claims on social media that she was 13.
According to the ministry, Alimat first presented at the hospital’s Mother and Child Centre on August 4 as an emergency case and immediately received life-saving treatment under the state’s Comprehensive Emergency Obstetrics and Newborn Care (CEmONC) programme without any financial obligation to her family.
She was discharged on August 11 after receiving emergency medical care valued at ₦75,950, which was fully covered by the Lagos State Government.
The ministry explained that the patient returned to the hospital on August 27 for follow-up consultations and additional medical investigations.
To further support her treatment, the hospital’s Social Welfare Unit approved financial assistance of ₦5,000 on August 28 and an additional ₦13,000 on August 31.
Combined with the ₦10,000 paid by the patient’s family, the total value of government support amounted to ₦93,950, the ministry said.
Addressing the controversy surrounding a Point of Sale (POS) transaction, Abayomi explained that the misunderstanding arose after the patient requested a refund of the ₦13,000 already paid by the hospital’s welfare unit because a non-governmental organisation reportedly declined to cover the cost.
“The findings confirm that Lagos State’s social health protection mechanisms worked effectively by providing timely emergency care and financial support worth ₦93,950 at no cost to the patient when she needed it most,” the commissioner stated.
