LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Police Command reaffirms that stop-and-search operations remain a critical crime-prevention tool following the recovery of an illegal firearm during a routine patrol in the state.
In a statement shared on its official X handle on Friday, the command says operatives of the Anti-Crime Unit attached to the Ishashi Division recover a locally made, cut-to-size double-barrel firearm and two live cartridges during the operation.
Police say the recovery occurs on Tuesday at about 10:45 p.m. while officers conduct a patrol and stop-and-search exercise within the Ishashi Division’s jurisdiction.
The operation, led by the Divisional Police Officer, forms part of ongoing efforts to disrupt criminal activity and strengthen public safety across Lagos.
“Stop-and-search remains a proactive crime-prevention measure,” the police say, stressing that such operations help remove illegal weapons from circulation before they are used to commit violent crimes.
The command notes that preventive policing strategies, including routine patrols and intelligence-led interventions, are central to maintaining security in Africa’s most populous city.
Police authorities assure residents that stop-and-search exercises are conducted professionally and in line with established rules of engagement, with respect for citizens’ rights.
The Lagos State Police Command reiterates its commitment to sustained patrols, targeted operations, and community collaboration to keep neighbourhoods safe, especially during periods of increased criminal risk.
Residents are encouraged to cooperate with officers during security checks and to report suspicious activities through official police channels.
