LAGOS, Nigeria – Two innocent bystanders are shot dead in a bustling Lagos neighbourhood after police officers pursuing suspected internet fraudsters open fire, sparking public outrage and renewed scrutiny of law-enforcement conduct.
The fatal incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Friday along Old Otta Road near an MRS filling station in the Alagbado area. Officers attached to the AIT Divisional Police Station fire at a fleeing vehicle, but the bullets miss their intended target and strike two passengers riding pillion on a commercial motorcycle. Both victims die instantly.
Eyewitnesses accuse the officers of abandoning the scene after the shooting, alleging that no attempt is made to assist the victims or call for medical help. Residents say the conduct fuels anger in the community, with several describing the incident as reckless and avoidable.
The Lagos State Police Command confirms late Friday that the officers involved are arrested hours after the incident. Police spokesperson CSP Abimbola Adebisi states on X that the officers “have been taken into custody following the unfortunate shooting in Alagbado.”
According to the Command, the Commissioner of Police orders a “thorough and intensive investigation,” assuring the public that findings will be made public and accountability enforced. “Justice will be served,” the statement adds.
Authorities say calm is later restored to the area, although residents remain visibly shaken by the violence in a normally busy commercial corridor.
The incident once again raises questions about the use of force, firearms discipline and operational protocols during police pursuits in densely populated urban centres
