LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government has intensified efforts to embed climate change awareness and road safety education into public secondary schools, targeting a new generation of environmentally responsible and safety-conscious students.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, disclosed this on Tuesday during a sensitisation programme held in Alausa, Ikeja, where teachers and students were trained on environmental sustainability and traffic safety.
Describing the initiative as critical to holistic education, Alli-Balogun said the government is prioritising practical knowledge that goes beyond classroom learning.
“As a government, we remain committed to environmental awareness and safety education in schools. We must raise students who are not only academically sound but also conscious of their environment and personal safety,” he said.
He noted that Lagos’ coastal nature makes it particularly vulnerable to climate-related challenges such as flooding and heatwaves, underscoring the urgency of preparedness.
Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, emphasised the importance of behavioural change, urging participants to translate knowledge into daily practice.
The programme, organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Transportation and the Office of Environmental Services, brought together key stakeholders to reinforce sustainable living and road discipline among young Nigerians.
