LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government urges the Federal Government to urgently fix the deteriorating Apapa Bridge, warning that continued neglect threatens public safety and Nigeria’s port-driven economy.
Speaking to journalists on Monday, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation and Logistics, Mr Adekoya Hassan, describes Apapa as a critical economic gateway and the primary exit route from the Lagos Port Complex. “We are concerned about the outbound heavy-duty truck traffic from this terminal,” Hassan says. “If this road is fixed 10 times, we will still have the same result, which is collapse.”
He warns that failure to take lasting action could disrupt port operations nationwide and calls on the Minister of Works to prioritise durable reconstruction rather than temporary repairs.
Stakeholders echo the concerns. Chairman of the Apapa Truck Cargoes, Saheed Mahmoud, says frequent accidents and vehicle damage plague the corridor. “This road is causing damage to our trucks. Some fall with their cargo here,” Mahmoud says. “We are pleading with the Federal Government to help.”
Similarly, Chairman of Klassique Tenor Limited, Mr Ayo Vaughan, criticises past interventions. “About three months ago, the Federal Government carried out fire-brigade repairs, but it has collapsed again,” he says.
