ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria’s two largest labour organisations announce plans for a mass rally in Abuja as the ongoing strike by Federal Capital Territory (FCT) workers enters its third week, intensifying pressure on authorities to address unpaid wages and welfare concerns.
In a joint statement issued on Sunday, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) confirm that the demonstration will take place on Tuesday, 3 February, at the headquarters of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA).
The communiqué, signed by Benson Upah, Acting General Secretary of the NLC, and Nuhu Toro, Secretary General of the TUC, says the rally is organised in solidarity with workers under the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC), who begin an indefinite strike on 19 January.
“Our support for the FCT workers is total and unwavering,” the labour centres declare, directing all affiliate unions and state councils to mobilise for what they describe as a peaceful protest.
“This rally affirms a core principle of the labour movement: an injury to one is an injury to all,” the statement says.
“Rights are not gifted; they are won through collective struggle,” the unions add, urging striking workers to remain resolute.
