A car crashed into a gas store along Arab Road in Kubwa, Abuja, early Sunday, triggering an explosion that shook nearby buildings and destroyed surrounding property.
The incident occurred at about 6:15 a.m., with residents several kilometres away reporting the impact of the blast.
Residents of Dantata Estate, about two kilometres from the scene, said the explosion was strong enough to cause buildings to vibrate. “The explosion was loud enough to wake people from their sleep, and we could feel the buildings shaking. Everyone was wondering what had happened,” a resident said.
The impact destroyed a shelter stand and signposts around the nearby Liberty Junction, while several shops were affected by the resulting fire.
The vehicle involved in the crash was completely burnt. The driver and a child were rescued from the scene and taken to a hospital for medical attention.
When our correspondent visited the area, security personnel and firefighters were at the scene working to restore normalcy and contain the effects of the incident. A large crowd gathered around the area, affecting the free flow of traffic.
The cause of the crash was not immediately established as of the time of filing this report.
