KATSINA, Nigeria – Tertiary institutions owned by the Katsina State Government suspend a two-week warning strike following fresh interventions by key stakeholders and influential indigenes, easing fears of prolonged academic disruption.
The Joint Consultative Forum of the affected institutions announces the suspension on Saturday after sustained mediation efforts, signalling a temporary truce while negotiations resume with the state government.
The forum’s chairman, Dr Muhammad Nasir-Gidado, says the strike—declared on January 12, 2026—was prompted by the government’s failure to address longstanding welfare and structural concerns affecting academic and non-academic staff.
Among the core demands are the approval and implementation of the 35 per cent and 25 per cent salary increments, alongside the placement of non-migrated staff on the Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure, CONTISS 15.
“We also demanded the immediate implementation of proper placement for CONTISS 15 non-migrated staff,” Nasir-Gidado says.
The forum further raises concern over the recent increase in students’ registration fees, warning that the decision worsens hardship for families and fuels declining enrolment across institutions.
“There was an unsympathetic increase in students’ registration fees without regard to current economic realities, which has negatively affected enrolment,” he adds.
Nasir-Gidado explains that dialogue facilitated by respected Katsina indigenes leads to an agreement to reopen talks immediately.
“Following the intervention of key stakeholders, the forum announces the suspension of this warning strike,” he says, urging members to return to work with immediate effect.
Institutions affected include Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic, Isa Kaita College of Education Dutsin-Ma, Yusuf Bala Usman College Daura, colleges of nursing and health sciences, and the Institute of Technology and Management.
The forum thanks students and parents for their patience, while reaffirming its commitment to sustained engagement until all issues are resolved.
