KATSINA, Nigeria – The Katsina State Government has approved the installation of solar-powered lighting in Tsangaya schools across all 361 wards and awarded a contract for the construction of 2,000 standardised kiosks to support small businesses and improve urban infrastructure.
The approvals were among key decisions taken during the ninth regular meeting of the State Executive Council for 2026, chaired by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda at the General Muhammadu Buhari House in Katsina.
Briefing journalists after the meeting on Thursday, Commissioner for Information, Bala Salisu Zango, said the projects reflect the administration’s commitment to education, enterprise development and sustainable economic growth.
Special Adviser on Power and Energy, Hafiz Ahmed, disclosed that 30 solar-powered lights would be installed in Tsangaya schools located in each of the state’s 361 wards.
“This initiative will create a more conducive learning environment in Tsangaya schools and support ongoing efforts to modernise and integrate the Almajiri education system,” Ahmed said.
Officials said the project would improve learning conditions, particularly during evening study sessions, while enhancing security around school premises.
In a separate approval, the government awarded a contract for the fabrication and installation of 2,000 modular kiosks under the Katsina Road Corridor Enterprise Infrastructure Programme.
Director-General of the Katsina State Enterprise Development Agency, Babangida Ruma, said the initiative would replace makeshift roadside stalls currently used by nano and micro-enterprises.
“The kiosks will provide safer, more durable and organised trading spaces while improving the appearance of urban centres,” he said.
The Executive Council also approved the adoption of Climate Change Budget Tagging across ministries, departments, agencies and local governments to improve the tracking of climate-related spending.
