KANO, Nigeria – The Kano State Government has hired 400 Mathematics teachers to address long-standing shortages in public secondary schools and improve student performance in science-based subjects.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf said the decision reflects his administration’s commitment to rebuilding the state’s STEM foundation.
“Mathematics is the foundation of science, technology, engineering and innovation,” he said. “For Kano to compete in a knowledge-driven world, we must build a strong base.”
The governor said the persistent gaps in Mathematics proficiency had become a major obstacle to preparing young people for careers in technology, engineering and research. By deploying the newly recruited teachers across the state, the government expects improvements in classroom delivery, examination outcomes and early interest in STEM careers.
The statement commended the Ministry of Education and the Senior Secondary Schools Management Board for conducting what it described as a transparent recruitment process.
Governor Yusuf urged the new teachers to demonstrate professionalism, discipline and commitment as they take up their assignments. He stressed that the administration expects them to “justify the responsibility entrusted to them” while supporting ongoing reforms across the education sector.
The recruitment aligns with broader efforts to upgrade teaching quality, modernise learning facilities and expand opportunities for students in public schools.
