KANO, Nigeria – A Kano-based mother, Hafsatu Yusuf, dies hours after delivering quintuplets at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, highlighting persistent maternal health risks in Nigeria.
The Kano State Ministry of Health confirms she died around 2:00 p.m. on Thursday due to excessive post-delivery bleeding despite medical intervention.
“She had been bleeding since after delivery, and all efforts by doctors were unsuccessful,” says ministry spokesperson Nabilusi Abubakar K/Na’isa.
The quintuplets—three boys and two girls—remain stable and under medical care, authorities say, as public appeals for support intensify.
The government had earlier assumed responsibility for the family’s medical expenses following the rare birth.
Her death underscores ongoing maternal mortality challenges, particularly post-partum complications, despite increased healthcare interventions.
